Volunteer Opportunities

• Thursday the 5 June at 8:00 AM at the Dunn Rose Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Bob Eskew needs help replacing about 150 roses.  Please bring shovel. pruning tools, and any tool that will cut a plastic pot. Contact Robert Eskew for more information.
• The Birmimgham Botanical Gardens Wildflower Curator needs some volunteers to help him in the Wildflower Garden. He needs 2-3 people to come in once a week or once every other week for a few hours. You would be weeding, planting, and assisting with general care of the Wildflower Garden. If you are interested please contact him: pdaniel@bbgardens.org.
• JCMGA Looking for Historian: We're in need of a chapter historian. For more information, take a look at the last two years' information in the Extension office at the BBG, or call Linda Systrom on 444-9634. If you are interested, contact Harold Deason.
• Gary Gerlach Plant Information Center (GPIC) needs volunteers. The Gary Gerlach Plant Information Center is a horticultural information center for visitors at all levels of gardening knowledge. You can reach the GPIC phones at 205-879-6964 ext. 21 or 22.
  
  We need to staff two shifts per day, two people per shift,
  Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM or 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM.
  Saturday it's two shifts, two people per shift 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM or 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM. Sunday it's one shift of two people from 1-4 PM. (Phone answering is optional on weekends.)
  
  Master Gardeners, you'll receive a user ID and password to view the calendar details. Find an open time and then send Tony an email or call him at 879-6964 ext 15 to plug your schedule into the calendar.
  
• Chapter Committees are always in need of volunteers. Look over the list of committees and contact president Harold Deason, president@jeffcomg.org, to learn more.

Continuing Education Opportunities

• Aldridge Gardens:  June 13, 2008, there will be a Hydrangea Symposium sponsored by the Alabama Hydrangea Society at Aldridge Gardens. There will be 3 speakers: Sandra Jonas, Jim Scott and Steve Bender. The cost is $60 which includes lunch. Registration is from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m with the first speaker at 9:00 a.m. The second speaker is at 11:00 a.m and the last speaker is at 1:00 p.m. There will be short tours of the gardens during the breaks and plants for sale from Meyer's Nursery. Contact Bob Smith for more information or visit their web site. Advance registration is being handled by Jan Holiday.
• One way to earn Continuing Education Units is by attending meetings. Here are the units for recent months:
